Cave of the Jaguar God The Maya city of Chichén Itzá is one of the most renowned ancient sites in Mexico, but even though it’s been known about and explored for a long time, it continues to provide surprises. In 2018, researchers were trying to look for a sacred well beneath the city, but instead found a series of caves, known as Balamku, which contained more than 150 ritual objects that had laid untouched for more than 1000 years. 9. The Longest Salt Cave Researchers have recently announced the discovery of the longest known salt cave in the world… one that starts at the southern tip of the dead sea in Israel, and extends more than 6 miles in length. Malham cave is about 2 miles longer than the previous record holder and, like other salt caves, is full of rare and unusual features. 8.
