Colossal Squid The elusive colossal squid lives at depths of 1,000 feet (305 meters) or more and is very rarely seen. It is believed to be the largest squid species and is the only recognised member of its genus. 8. Beached Whale Shark In August 2012, a 42-foot-long (12.8 meters) whale shark became stranded on a beach in Java, Indonesia. After washing ashore, the three-ton (2.72 metric tons) fish was incredibly weak, and rescue efforts failed to save its life. 7. Zulu The Giraffe With six-foot-long legs that are taller than many humans, giraffes are the world’s tallest mammals. They typically grow between 14 and 19 feet (4.3-5.8 meters) tall and weigh between 1,750 and 2,800 pounds (794-1,270 kg). Their height comes in handy when it comes to feeding, as well as keeping an eye out for predators on the horizon. 6. Biggest-Ever Dinosaurs Discovered in Argentina in 1987, the Argentinosaurus was one of the largest-known dinosaurs and land animals to ever exist. It lived during the Cretaceous period, between 100 million and 93 million years ago. 5. Images of the floating, deflated-looking, 50-foot-long (15.24 meters) carcass,- that’s almost 4 Volkswagen beetles lined up!- which appeared to have tentacle-like protrusions, went viral as people around the world tried guessing what the animal was. 4. 24,000-Pound Elephant Elephants are the largest living land mammals. There are three elephant species, the biggest among them being the African elephant, which has a shoulder height between 8.2 and 13 feet (2.5-4 meters) and weighs between 2.5 and 7 tons (2.3-6.4 metric tons). Elephants also have the largest brains of any mammal, with a mass of just over 11 pounds (5 kg). 3. Southern Elephant Seals The southern elephant seal is the world’s largest living carnivoran. Not to be confused with the term “carnivore,” which applies to all meat-eating creatures, carnivorans are members of the diverse Carnivora order of placental mammals, which consists of 280 species. 2. Spinosaurus The largest carnivorous dinosaur was the Spinosaurus, whose name means “spine lizard” and refers to the creature’s sail of long, distinctive spines along its back. Each spine, which grew from the animal’s vertebrae, measured up to seven feet (2.1 meters) long. 1. Blue Whale The blue whale is the largest-known animal alive today and to ever exist, period. It grows up to 100 feet (30.5 meters) long and weighs as much as 150 tons (136 metric tons).
