Spanish Invasion of Britain Following the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in 1587, King Philip II of Spain sent his armada to invade England the following year as punishment, and for power and political reasons... Launched in August of 1588, the ‘fortunate fleet', set sail with 150 ships and 30,000 men, and was the largest fleet ever seen in Europe… which many believed to be unbeatable. 9. The War of 1812 If you can remember back to history class, the War of 1812 was mostly the result of British sanctions against the US trading with the French and the Spanish. It officially began when American troops attacked Canada and burned some governmental buildings. In response, the British retaliated and chose to attack Washington D.C, which at the time was practically undefended. 8. Mongol Invasion of Japan In the year 1281, the Mongol Yuan dynasty led their second attempt to invade Japan. With a force comprising of almost 4,500 ships and 140,000 troops, their power seemed insurmountable, and they planned on overwhelming the Japanese into submission. 7. New Moore Island The rising sea levels due to global warming are having a noticeable impact on the geography of the planet, but in one case it prevented an escalating conflict between India and Bangladesh. For almost 3 decades they had laid claim to a stretch of land in the Bay of Bengal called New Moore Island. 6. Persian Invasion of Greece During the 5th century BC, the Persian Kings Darius and Xerxes sent huge armadas of warships into the Aegean with the aim of adding mainland Greece to their empire, but despite three major attempts to do so, the weather always seemed to get in the way. 5. The Battle of Poltava The battle of Poltava between Russia and Sweden marked the end of Sweden's position as a major power, and led to Russia taking control of eastern Europe… and it was all because of another freezing winter. Sweden's Charles XII had failed to lead his army to Moscow during an attempted invasion of Russia, and by the winter of 1708 found himself running low on supplies while moving south towards Ukraine. 4. France's Invasion of Ireland In 1796, while at war with Britain, the French navy was sent to conquer Ireland… a plan that went horrendously wrong. The idea was to take advantage of increasing unrest within the population with how the country was being run, and to work together with the United Irishmen to put further pressure on Britain. 3. French Invasion of Russia France's most famous leader, Napoleon, took control in 1799 and went on to take over much of Europe through a series of impressive military victories. Czar Alexander I of Russia was a thorn in his side, though, and Napoleon saw no choice but to invade Russia in 1812 to teach him a lesson… a decision that would be one of the biggest mistakes he ever made. 2. The First Battle of Fort Fisher The first battle of Fort Fisher was a naval siege that took place between December 23rd and 27th in 1864 when federal forces tried to take the fort that guarded Wilmington in North Carolina. It was the South's last Atlantic port of significance, but on this occasion, it wasn't destined to be captured. 1. Black Monday The 100 years war was a series of battles between English and French troops that took place over a 116 year period between 1337 and 1453.
