Aristocrat’s Elongated Skull In late 2013, archaeologists discovered a strange elongated female skull while unearthing a batch of 18 tombs in the Alsace region of western France. The shocking artifact dates back to roughly 1,650 years ago, during the Dark Ages, and was found buried with valuable items, including a rare bronze mirror, gold pins, decorative belt hooks called chatelaines, a stag antler comb, and pearls, suggesting that the person in question was an aristocrat. 8. Rhino-Sized Wombat Australia is famous for its unique wildlife, and many people don’t realize how big modern wombats really are until they see one up close. These seemingly small and cuddly critters can reach nearly 80 pounds (36 kg) and measure as much as 3.3 feet (1 meter) long. 7. Panga Ya Saidi In May 2018, an international team of scientists announced the discovery of a network of caves called Panga ya Saidi in Kenya’s humid coastal forest. This network was continuously used for at least 78,000 years, from the Middle Stone Age to the present day. That’s quite a long time!! 6. Takht-e Rostam Built sometime during the 4th or 5th century, the Stupa of Takht-e Rostam is an ancient Buddhist monastery in Haibak, Afghanistan. You may find this unusual, considering how devoutly Muslim the country is today, but before the advent of Islam, the structure was an important center of Buddhist teachings. 5. Heslington Brain Back in 2008, archaeologists in northern England unearthed a skull containing a bizarrely well-preserved portion of a human brain that had sat buried in the mud for some 2,500 years. It’s highly unusual for soft tissue to remain even slightly intact for this long, leading to the obvious question of why the Heslington Brain, as it came to be called, stayed in such good shape for so many centuries 4. Ancient Zoo Throughout world history, many cultures regarded ownership of exotic pets as an elite status symbol. This was certainly the case in Ancient Egypt, where having a menagerie was an ultimate sign of wealth. In fact, the world’s first zoo was located in Pre-dynastic Upper Egypt’s capital, Hierakonpolis. 3. Sunghir Burials In Vladimir, Russia, a few hours east of present-day Moscow, is an ancient burial site called Sunghir, where a Paleolithic hunter-gatherer society interred their deceased members in uniquely different -- and thus yet unexplainable -- ways. 2. Advanced Stone Age Tools Traditionally speaking, researchers believe that the ability to craft superior tools played an imperative role in humankind’s survival after leaving Africa around 60,000 years ago. This view was challenged in 2018 with the discovery of sophisticated Stone Age tools in southern India, which suggests that modern humans migrated out of Africa in waves. 1. Bloody Handkerchief Legend holds that after the troubled monarch King Louis XVI was decapitated nearly 230 years ago during the French Revolution, people dipped their handkerchiefs in his blood as a creepy souvenir. Most people wrote this story off as a mere myth until 2013, when a team of scientists linked a bloody handkerchief to the unlucky leader. #mysterious #archaeological #discoveries #recent #archaeology #findings #unexplained #artifacts #originsexplained #top10
