RUINS OF GEDI Located along Kenya’s north coast in East Africa, in a lush forest next to the Indian Ocean, are the ruins of Gedi, a walled Swahili town that was originally built in the 12th century, before being rebuilt during the 15th and 16th centuries. Gedi peaked during the 1400's , as evidenced by the stone and coral-brick ruins of mosques, a palace, and homes dating back to the time. 8. CODEX GIGAS Nicknamed the “Devil’s Bible,” the Codex Gigas is the world’s largest existing medieval manuscript measuring 36 inches (91.44 cm) -- or three feet (almost one meter) long. 7. Ubaid Lizardmen The Sumerians are commonly considered among the earliest civilizations, but evidence of even more ancient societies has been found, including in southern Iraq, where archaeologists uncovered pre-Sumerian artifacts dating back some 7,000 years. 6. Unknown Woman Of The Seine During the late 1880s, an unidentified young woman’s body was pulled from the River Seine in Paris. She came to be known as L'Inconnue de la Seine, or the “Unknown Woman of the Seine,” and is also occasionally called La Belle Italienne. 5. Isleworth Mona Lisa We’ve all heard of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa -- it’s one of the most famous portraits of all time. But you probably didn’t know that there’s another painting depicting the same female subject with the same enigmatic half-smile, which many people also attribute to the work of Leonardo Da Vinci, although the identity of the painting’s creator is admittedly unproven. 4. Chinese Pre-Columbian Petroglyphs In The USA Who reached North America first, after the Native Americans, has long been a topic of debate amongst scholars. One controversial theory, which has gained very little support, but is backed by a few experts in their own right, posits that the Chinese reached the New World before Columbus, before the Vikings, and other Europeans. 3. Cluster Bombs This image of a cluster bomb unit containing over 600 cluster bombs was taken in 2006 in Ouazaiyeh, Lebanon. I’m sure you can agree that it would be terrifying to stumble upon a scene like this while walking through a field, and for years now, cluster bombs have been at the center of various controversies around the world due to the danger they harbor to non-combatants. 2. Evidence Of Atlantis Most experts regard the fabled city of Atlantis to be just that -- more of a lesson, mythical in nature, and not a place that ever really existed. This conclusion came after much time was spent trying to figure out what place in the modern world, if any, could represent Atlantis. 1. Rewriting Humankind’s History A 2018 discovery flew completely in the face of everything experts understood, up until that point, about the migration of the earliest humans from Africa and into other parts of the world. #mysterious #discoveries #unexplained #strangest #unsettling #finds #archaeology #unsolved #originsexplained #top10
