Lion Time Capsule In late 2014, sculptor Robert Shure discovered a time capsule inside the head of a lion statue that sat outside the Old State House in Boston, Massachusetts for over a century. Shure had been tasked with restoring the statue, along with a unicorn sculpture, when he made the incredible find. 8. Statue Within A Statue This find dates back to 1955, when workers in Bangkok, Thailand dropped a clay Buddha statue they were moving. Whoops! It broke, and it turns out that there was another statue of Buddha made of solid gold inside! 7. Drugs It’s not unheard of for drug smugglers to hide their goods inside of statues, but it’s pretty unusual for traffickers to move their product by disguising it as a statue. Someone had gotten creative! In Laredo, Texas in 2008, federal agents seized a painted statue of Jesus made from paste with as much as six pounds (2.7 kg) of cocaine mixed in. 6. Confederate Time Capsule While moving a Confederate statue named “Johnny Reb” in downtown Orlando’s Lake Eola Park in 2017 amid conflicting opinions and public controversy over its alleged overtones of racism, workers discovered a suspected time capsule inside its base. 5. A Mummified Buddhist Monk A statue of a sitting Buddha made its way from China to the Netherlands where it was purchased by a private buyer. The buyer took it to get restored and it turns out the statue came with a surprise. The 1,000-year-old Buddha statue had a mummified monk inside! 4. Money If you ask practically anyone what they’d love to find unexpectedly, “money” would probably be a popular answer. Some Australian experts were among the lucky few who could say this happened to them when, in 2016, they discovered an ancient banknote inside a 645-year-old wooden Chinese religious statue that they were preparing for auction. 3. Hundreds Of Love Letters In Verona, Italy in 2014, shortly before Valentine’s Day, hundreds of love letters and keys were found inside a bronze statue of Juliet from Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy. The statue, which was created by sculptor Nereo Constantini shortly before his death in 1969, had been taken down from its location in the courtyard of ‘Juliet’s house’ in her hometown for restoration 2. Human Teeth In 2014 in the small Mexican parish of San Bartolo Cuau-tlalpan, a restoration team working on a painted wooden statue of Jesus discovered something unexpected!! But not in the same way as the other one. This statue is equipped with real human teeth. The 18th-century statue, called the Christ of Patience, contains eight teeth from an unknown adult. 1. Artifacts In early 2018, Japanese officials reported the discovery of nearly 200 artifacts inside a religious statue standing at just 30 inches (76.2 cm) tall. The relatively small Buddhist figurine represents a depiction of Monju Bosatsu, a Bodhisattva, or person who is on the path to achieving Buddhahood or who is capable of reaching nirvana but chooses not to, for the sake of helping humanity on Earth. More specifically, Monju Bosatsu represents wisdom. #statues #discoveries #originsexplained
