Payara An apex predator of the Amazon basin, Hydrolycus scomberoides, or the “payara” for short, is a dogtooth tetra species that eats fish half its size or bigger, including piranhas. 9. Frilled Shark The ancient, eel-like frilled shark is a deepwater species that lives in the open ocean, far below the water’s surface, typically at depths between 390 and 4,200 feet (119-1,280 meters). It’s the last surviving member of a prehistoric family of otherwise extinct sharks. 8. Atlantic Wolffish Named for its ferocious appearance, Anarhichas lupus, or the Atlantic wolffish, has large teeth and grows up to five feet (1.5 meters) long. That’s almost as tall as me!! It uses its powerful jaws for crushing shellfish, sea urchins, and starfish. 7. Sea Lamprey The sea lamprey is an ancient species that resembles something out of a science fiction film. Native to the northern and western Atlantic Ocean, it’s one of the most primitive vertebrates in existence. Some people refer to this eel-like species as a “lamprey eel,” but it is not an eel. 6. Blobfish The blobfish looks like what it sounds like -- a floppy, gelatinous blob with a permanent frown, a sagging nose-like appendage, and expressionless eyes. In a 2013 online poll hosted by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, the blobfish was voted as the world’s most hideous species! Poor guy! 5. Pirarucu Native to Amazonian lakes and rivers, the carnivorous Arapaima gigas, also known as Amazonian cod or the pirarucu, is one of the world’s largest freshwater fish. This ancient species grows up to 10 feet (3 meters) long and can weigh as much as 485 pounds (220 kg). It’s rather strange-looking, thanks to its long, narrow body with a flat, rounded rear and rudimentary tail. 4. Northern Stargazer To say that Astroscopus guttatus -- the northern stargazer -- is strange-looking would be a gross understatement. This highly-unusual species dwells at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean off the East Coast of the U.S., as far south as North Carolina and as far north as the Chesapeake Bay and New York. 3. Sheepshead The sheepshead fish, is scary for the simple fact that it has bizarrely human-looking teeth. Look inside its mouth, and you’ll see that it has several rows of them, making it look even stranger than it would to begin with. 2 Anglerfish The anglerfish looks like something straight out of a horror movie. This carnivorous, bony fish ranges in length from eight inches to 3.3 feet!! (20 cm to 1m) and weighs up to 110 pounds (50 kg), but it’s not the creature’s arguably large size that will terrify you the most. 1. Sarcastic Fringehead The sarcastic fringehead lives in the northern Pacific Ocean, off the coasts of California, and Baja California, Mexico. Unlike many of the fish I've told you about, it’s pretty small, only reaching about 12 inches/1 foot (30 cm) long at most. #scary #fish #originsexplained
