Black Hole pair produce flares 'brighter than 1 trillion stars'

A pair of black in galaxy OJ 287 orbit each other and "twice every 12 years, the smaller black hole crashes through the enormous disk of gas surrounding its largest companion," according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The crashes produce super bright flares. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
