* Recently, researchers have discovered a vast area in northern Guatemala, containing thousands of previously unknown Mayan buildings, the ruins of a civilization the size of which has shocked archaeologists. Tikal, a major Mayan site nearby, may have merely been a small piece of the newly found city. The ruins were uncovered by shining lasers down from passing airplanes, mapping the hidden floor beneath the jungle canopy.
