Wooly Mammoth in A Field Farmer James Bristle and a friend were doing some digging in a field in Michigan to make way for a new natural gas line when they came across something hard. At first they thought it was a fence post caked with mud, but instead, it turned out to be the remains of a Wooly mammoth that were about 15,000 years old!! 9. Roman Villa When a British rug designer decided to convert an old barn on his property in Wiltshire, England, he had no idea he would uncover one of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries in recent times. Instead of stringing up an overhead cable to supply power to the barn, Luke Irwin, the owner of the farm, insisted on burying the cable underground. 8. Grauballe Man In 1952, the ancient remains of a murder victim were found in a peat bog in Denmark. Discovered with a slashed throat, the Grauballe Man is believed to have died sometime in the third century BC. This 2,300 year old murder mystery has baffled paleontologists since he was found. 7. Underground City Similar to the story of the English farmer who wanted to renovate his home, the discovery of a mysterious underground city in Turkey came about when a local man wanted to do renovations as well. When the man in question knocked down a wall and discovered a strange room, he continued to dig further and ended up exposing an intricate tunnel system with a series of rooms. 6. Viking Burial Pit When 150 young male skeletons were discovered in Waymouth, England, excavators were thrilled. While such a discovery might seem a little gruesome, archaeologists were particularly excited when scientific examinations revealed the mass grave carried executed Vikings. Although I don’t know if “excited” is the best word. 5. World Trade Center Ship In 2010, workers excavating Ground Zero unearthed a mysterious ship where the World Trade Center Towers once stood. The wood-hulled vessel measuring 30 feet in length was discovered about 20 to 30 feet below street level in what would become the new underground parking structure of the One World Trade Center. Dating from the mid to late 1700s, the ship stood undisturbed for more than 200 years, but as soon as it was exposed to the air, it started to deteriorate. 4. Ancient Mayan Mural It seems that home renovation projects are very popular for leading to historical discoveries. A family in Guatemala was peeling back layers of paint and uncovered elaborate murals underneath. It turned out they were centuries old paintings made by the ancient Mayans. 3. Venus De Milo Venus de Milo is one of the most well-known sculptures in ancient Greek history. But she still has some secrets. It is believed the Greek statue depicts the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite. The statue was discovered in the early 1800’s by a farmer who came across the statue in pieces within the ruins of an ancient city on the island of Milos. 2. Buried Nuns In the English village of Oxford, old remains were found at a former Nunnery built in 1110. The remains of 92 people were discovered by archaeologists, who made the grisly discovery that some of the bodies were buried upside down. Considered to be a mark of shame, researchers believe perhaps the unfortunate people were responsible for lewd or immoral behavior. 1. Biblical Town Along the Sea of Galilee, a town dating back more than 2000 years was discovered in 2013.
