Bodie A State Historic Park since the early 1960's, Bodie, California is a quintessential ghost town located east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. When a man by the name of William S. Bodey discovered gold in 1859 near what is now called Bodie Bluff, the destiny of this once great town was solidified. 9. China’s Wonderland ‘Wonderland’ in China was supposed to be Beijing’s version of Disneyland. Developers promised the largest amusement park in Asia, but now the fantasy land has been abandoned since 1998. Set on 100 acres of land 45 minutes from the center of Beijing, Wonderland never made it past initial construction. 8. Pripyat The nuclear disaster of Chernobyl in 1986, left behind the ghost town of Pripyat. Located just 3km from the town was evacuated 36 hours after the meltdown happened. Many workers from the power plant lived in the city. 7. Ghost Metro Stations of Paris With a city like Paris, you would expect their extensive transit system to go through a number of changes over the years. But when new stations are introduced, others are abandoned, leading to a number of “ghost” stations, some of which were closed at the start of the second World War. 6. Whitby Abbey Located in the North Yorkshire area of England, Whitby Abbey is a monastery built in the Gothic style in the 13th century. Unfinished until the 15th century, the original monastery was believed to have been founded on the same site around 657 and became one of the most important centers in the Anglo-Saxon world. 5. The Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital Ellis Island is famous for being the gateway to America for immigrants coming from overseas in the 20th century. But it may surprise you to know that one of the buildings on the island that played an important part in the lives of many of the immigrants is now abandoned. 4. Maunsell Sea Forts Large sea fortifications are standard for nations trying to protect themselves during wartimes. By WWII, most large fortifications were obsolete for most nations, but sea fortifications around the Thames and the Mersey Estuaries would prove to be integral to protecting English citizens. 3. Cape Romano Sea Huts On the southern tip of Marco Island in Cape Romano, Florida, there are a series of strange dome houses sitting in the sea. Rumors swirled that the structures were once home to a secret cult or buildings left behind by extraterrestrials, but the reality is far less strange. The homes were built in 1980 by a retired oil producer named Bob Lee, who had the idea to create self-sustaining, solar-powered homes. 2. City Hall Subway Station, NYC Like any big city, the subway system in New York is a big part of everyday life. So it might surprise you that the first subway station built in the city was abandoned just over 40 years after it was opened. Instead of falling into disrepair, though, the station, with its impressive vaulted ceilings and whimsical skylights, is in almost pristine condition. 1. Craco, Italy For those world travelers who are looking for a spooky trip off the beaten path, you may want to head to the small medieval village of Craco, Italy. Located about 25 miles inland, the village was once inhabited by the Greeks. Tombs have been found on the island that date from the 8th century, but earthquakes, landslides and a lack of fertile farming land led the original inhabitants to abandon the town. #abandoned #places #originsexplained #katrina
