Ancient Weapon-Making Site A new Russian military base might seem like an unlikely place to discover ancient weaponry, but this is exactly what was discovered recently on an Arctic island. Even more curious, the ancient weapon-making site just happened to be found next to the remains of a woolly mammoth. As construction began on the base, workers started finding all kinds of bones so they called in paleontologists. 9. World Trade Center Shipwreck When archaeologists were monitoring the excavation of the former World Trade Center site, the discovery of an ancient sailing ship underneath baffled researchers. Located 22 feet below street level, the ancient ship was discovered in what is now an underground security department complex. 8. Ancient Scottish Home In the shadow of a 21st-century building site, one of Scotland’s earliest homes was uncovered. Dating from the Mesolithic period, all that remains of the 10,000-year-old home is a large oval pit measuring nearly 7m in length, along with hearths, flint and arrowheads. So not too shabby for 10,000 years ago! 7. Black Death Skeletons While conducting excavation work for a $14.8 billion rail project in England, workers stumbled upon some skeletons. Luckily they weren’t recent!! Archaeologists were called in and they determined that the skeletons were not just average citizens. They are believed to be some of the 50,000 victims of the Plague to have been buried in a local cemetery in the 14th century. 6. Ancient Maya Ball Court During excavation for a housing development in the Yucatán, construction workers discovered something a little strange, and called in archaeologists. Now, the housing development will have to be modified, and if you get a house there, you’ll be living right next to history! They had discovered a 2,500-year-old court used for a ball game played by the Ancient Mayans. 5. Ancient Whale Species At a construction site in Southern California, workers were in for a surprise when they found gigantic bones. Scientists discovered 11 ancient whale species, including 4 new species. During roadwork in 2000 near Los Angeles, construction crews uncovered whale fossils that were thought to be around 17 to 19 million years old. 4. Mass Burial Site When road crews were digging in Pennsylvania a few years ago, they didn't expect to uncover a mass grave containing human bones. Historians believe the remains belonged to people who died from the Spanish influenza in 1918. 3. Greenwich Village Crypt When workers were digging near New York's Iconic Washington Square Park to install a water main, a number of crypts housing coffins and human bones were discovered. 2. Old Town Alexandria Ancient Ship While excavating in preparation for a new hotel construction, workers near the Potomac River found a ship believed to have run aground in the late 1700’s. The partial hull of the ship was found on the same bock where workers found the 1755 foundation from a warehouse thought to be the city’s first public building. 1. Ancient Tomb in Israel In the autumn of 2015, Israeli officials reported that a group of contractors had discovered a Roman-era sarcophagus. However, the news does not end there. When the 1800-year-old coffin was excavated during construction of a new neighborhood, they used a tractor to rip it from its burial place. The workers, for some unknown reason then hid their discovery behind boards and sheet metal.
