Onna-Bugeisha The term “Samurai” refers strictly to male warriors, but women from the same social class as Samurai received similar martial arts and strategy training. The formal term for these women, who belonged to the “bushi,” or warrior class, were called “Onna-Bugeisha,”and participated in combat alongside their male counterparts. 7. STRANGE-LOOKING ARMOR The armor worn by the Samurai was, perhaps, the strangest thing about them. It was, however, very well-made and effective - so much so, the US army based the design for its first flak jacket on Samurai combat attire. 6. WAKASHUDO When it came to homosexuality and bisexuality, the Samurai were very open-minded, especially for the time. I mean, we are talking from around 1185 until 1868 which was also known as the Age of the Samurai. 5. WESTERN SAMURAI Under certain circumstances, people from outside of Japan could train with the Samurai, and sometimes even became one. This was considered a special honor that could only be bestowed by powerful leaders, such as territorial lords, or the Shogun, or warlord. Along with this special training, a person received a new, Japanese name and Samurai weapons. 4. THE SAMURAI SOCIAL CLASS Contrary to popular belief, the Samurai were not a rare, elite force, but an entire governing social class. The term “Samurai” originally meant “those who serve in close attendance to the nobility.” As the term evolved over time, it came to be associated with the entire bushi class, who are thought to descend from nobility. 3. THE MAJORITY OF SAMURAI WERE WELL-EDUCATED In addition to being skilled warriors, most Samurai were also highly-educated, and at a time when most Europeans could not read, literacy levels were very high among the Samurai, and they were also skilled at mathematics. However, not all Samurai were equally skilled. When it came to both combat and education, the level of a Samurai’s training often depended on his family’s wealth. 2. THEY MAY HAVE DESCENDED FROM THE AINU It’s easy to think of the Samurai as having tall, built frames, and their armor certainly may have contributed to this image. However, most Samurai ranged from 5’3” to 5’5” in height (160-165 cm) and had slim bodies. Despite their smaller frames, they were superior warriors. 1. A SAMURAI COULD GET FIRED When a Samurai was disowned or lost by his master, he became known as a “wave man,” or a ronin. A ronin was still technically considered a Samurai, but being a ronin generally meant that the person represented the end of their bloodline as members of the class. Ronin were considered shameful and were outcasted from other Samurai. They also could not find employment with another lord.
