THE BLACK SWAN PROJECT In 1804, the Spanish warship Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes capsized during the Battle of Cape Santa Maria and sank off the shore of Portugal. This occurred during peacetime and in the absence of a declaration of war between Spain and Britain, at the command of British Commodore Graham Moore, who ordered his squadron to attack the ship. Those British are pretty sneaky... 7. QUEEN ANNE’S REVENGE Before the Queen Anne’s Revenge became infamously known as Blackbeard’s flagship, this 18th-century vessel was used for even more appalling purposes as a French ship called La Concorde. It was owned by a prominent French merchant named Rene Montaudouin, under whom it made three known trading expeditions. 6. SS BAYCHIMO The SS Baychimo was a steel-hulled steamer that got trapped in the ice of the Canadian Arctic in 1931. Not wanting to abandon the valuable furs the ship was carrying, the crew built a wooden structure on the nearby ice and waited for rescue. When they woke up the next morning, the ship had vanished, and the crew simply assumed that it had sunk. However, an Inuit seal hunter claimed to have witnessed it floating nearby. 5. VASA When the Swedish vessel Vasa set sail on August 10, 1628, it was considered the world’s most high-tech warship. But Vasa’s glory didn’t last long - just 20 minutes into her maiden voyage, the ship sank. A combination of engineering flaws and strong winds quickly brought Vasa down in front of an appalled crowd that had gathered to witness the ship sail out of Stockholm Harbor. 4. ANDREA GAIL The Andrea Gail was a 72-foot-long private fishing vessel whose fate inspired a 1997 book and 2000 hit movie entitled “The Perfect Storm.” On September 20, 1991, the six-man crew of the Andrea Gail set sail on a 900-mile journey for Newfoundland from the Port of Gloucester in Massachusetts. In late October, after having poor luck fishing and the ship’s ice machine breaking, Captain Frank W. “Billy” Tyne, Jr. ordered for the vessel to return to Gloucester, despite warnings about dangerous weather conditions. 3. SWEEPSTAKES The Sweepstakes is known as one of the world’s most beautiful and best-preserved shipwrecks. Built in Burlington, Ontario in 1867, the 119-foot-long schooner’s short life on the water came to an end in 1885, when her hull was damaged while hauling coal near Cove Island. After the boat was towed to Big Tub Harbor for repairs, it was deemed impractical to try saving it. 2. MARY ROSE The Mary Rose was a Tudor warship commissioned by Henry VIII in 1510 as part of his efforts to establish a standing Navy. It served in wars against France, Brittany, and Scotland after being launched in 1511 and remained in service for 34 years. On July 19, 1545, the Mary Rose saw her last action while leading the attack on the galleys of a French invasion fleet. The ship sank in the straits north of the Isle of Wight, known as the Solent. 1. RMS REPUBLIC Built in 1903, the Republic was an RMS - a Royal Mail Ship - that was authorized to carry British and American mail. The ship was originally built for service on the Dominion Line, but became the property of the White Star Line shortly after its maiden voyage. At 570 feet long and weighing 16,000 tons, it was one of the most cosmopolitan passenger vessels at the time. Because of the amount of wealthy passengers it carried, the RMS Republic earned the nickname “The Millionaire’s Ship.” Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!
