I’m your host Matty Willz and we’ll be exploring the cool world – get it, cool? – of one of the coldest places on earth – with today’s title – What They Discovered in Antarctica Should Never Have Been Found! 10 Active Volcanoes So, we’ll kick things off right here today with a story about something that you may not expect to see in the world’s coldest area – and that’s because this is about the hottest thing on the planet. Of course I’m talking about volcanoes – and it’s commonly known throughout the world of science that there are indeed active volcanoes beneath sheets of ice in the Antarctic – and more and more people are ceding the notion that this could be a contributing factor to the melting glaciers. In fact, some scientists have also warned that these wild card volcanoes need to be considered when estimating the world’s impeding rising sea levels, although there are some out there that dispute that claim 9 The Headless Chicken Monster So moving things right along, check out this guy – who’s technically known in the animal world as a sea cucumber, however may better be known as – the headless chicken monster! Yeah, that’s right – it’s called a headless chicken monster – and while looking at it here on the ocean floor, it’s kinda easy to see why it earned that name! It can grow up to about 9 inches long, and they spend a vast majority of their life walking about on the ocean floor. Now this is the first time this animal has been filmed in this area, however – that’s likely do to there being brand new equipment out there enabling scientists and researchers to get a far better understanding of what’s really going on out there. 8 Penguin Selfies So we all have that one friend that whenever we’re out they almost always have to stop the entire party from moving forward until they take a self – am I right? Well, go figure – if you leave a video camera around a bunch of penguins in the Antarctic – they’re gonna find a way to take a selfie too. Well, these penguins sort of took some selfies – and whatever you want too call it, they look pretty cute! A guy named Eddie Gault, a member of the Australian Antarctic Division, placed a camera near a massive penguin colony they were studying. This footage is the result of a curious bird mixed with a little modern technology. Pretty cute, right? Hmmm, I wonder what else we’ll stumble upon from the coldest parts of the world in today’s episode? 7 The Arctic is Melting So the polar regions of the earth, the Arctic and Antarctica areas to the extreme north and south, are very important for healthy world climate. The problem though? The ice is melting at an extreme rate, and if all of that ice truly turned into water then we’re all in pretty big trouble. Since 1990 alone there has been intense amount of ice lost, and this is one of those situations where – as humans – we really don’t have all that much control. More proof the ice is melting? Geologoists say that the thickest part of the ice – which they’ve been monitoring since 1960, has decreased by 40% in the last 50 plus years, and suggest the arctic could be without ice by 2040.
