PRINCESS JULIANA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT As the main transportation hub of the Caribbean island of St. Maarten (Saint Martin), the Princess Juliana International Airport is nice, but by all outward appearances, it’s not spectacular. The airport’s humble beginnings consisted of a short military airstrip that was constructed. 8. PARO AIRPORT Only 17 pilots in the entire world are authorized to land at Paro Airport in Bhutan, which consists of a single, 6,500-foot-long runway nestled among 18,000-foot mountain peaks. The pilot must make a blind approach to the runway at a 45-degree angle, and the runway remains out of sight until the very last minute prior to landing. 7. SINGAPORE CHANGI AIRPORT For six straight years and as of 2018, Singapore’s Changi Airport was named the world’s best airport by SkyTrax, the company behind the World Airport Award. Each of the airport’s terminals feature a series of botanical gardens. The airport also contains a butterfly garden, with over 1,000 butterflies; several Asian-style ponds for relaxation; and a sunflower garden. Why don’t all airports have this?? 6. GIBRALTAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Travel writer Chloe Pantazi included the Gibraltar National Airport on her list of the world’s most beautiful airport approaches, which was featured on Travel & Leisure’s website in 2015, so you can count on your enjoyable experience here to begin before you even arrive - if you’re arriving by air, of course. 5. MADEIRA AIRPORT, PORTUGAL The landing strip at Portugal’s Madeira Airport is situated between steep cliffs and the ocean within the autonomous archipelago of Madeira. As it currently stands, it’s a small airport with a short runway, but in the beginning, it was an even smaller airport with an even shorter runway. The first extension to the runway was added in 1977, but it wasn’t enough for the types of aircraft that needed to land here. 4. DUBAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT When it comes to modernity in any context, Dubai almost always takes first prize. The cosmopolitan city boasts the world’s tallest skyscraper, an upscale man-made archipelago, the world’s largest indoor amusement park, and one of the most dazzling water fountains one could ever hope to see. Naturally, Dubai’s airport doesn’t fall short of the ultra-chic, high-tech precedent that the United Arab Emirates has set for itself in recent years. 3. INCHEON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT You’re probably used to airports that discourage catnapping, thanks to hard, rigid, and otherwise uncomfortable furniture. But at this massive airport in South Korea, you won’t only find a comfortable lounge chair to doze off on, you’ll find it in a darkened corner, to assist your journey into dreamland. 2. WELLINGTON AIRPORT The Wellington Airport is the third-busiest in New Zealand and consists of a one-lane, 6,351-foot runway, which is flanked by water on both ends. Landings here are particularly difficult due to the characteristically strong gusts of the mountainous area. Taking off is equally as challenging, due to the potential for being swept up by hurricane-force winds. 1. TELLURIDE REGIONAL AIRPORT At 9,070 feet, Telluride Regional Airport in San Miguel county, Colorado is the highest-elevation airport in North America. On both ends of the runway, there are sheer, 1,000-foot cliffs. As if those conditions don’t make the runway difficult enough to navigate in the first place, the mountain winds cause a strong vertical turbulence during the winter months.
