Let’s get rollin! 10 Giant Pacific Octopus Alrighty folks up first on today’s list is something that looks a bit more like a monster, than an animal – and it’s a creature that no only is massively huge, but also a master of camouflage as well, which we’ll cover in just a bit. But the Giant Pacific Octopus, which can be found – well, you guessed it – in the Pacific waters stretching from Korea and Japan, all the way to North Alaska and even parts of Southern California. This gigantic sea dwelling animal can reach up to about 30 feet in length, which is pretty insane considering a deep-sea diver would probably only be about 6 feet tall. For it’s size, they prefer more shallow, coastal waters – usually only diving down to depths of around 300 feet. What most people don’t know is that these animals are carnivores, and in the wild will usually only live to about 5 years old – but there have been cases to see them live much longer than that. So, what do you think? 9 Portuguese Man o’ War Alright in the interest of keeping things moving right along – let’s go ahead and do just that. Now this next clip features an animal that – to be 100 percent honest with you – I’ve never heard of before – HOWEVER – I would DEFINITELY like to submit the name of this animal into consideration for the best animal names on earth! As this guy is called The Portuguese Man o’ War! The portu-what? Yeah, the Portuguese Man o’ War. Now, at first glance it’s sort of even difficult to estimate what kind of animal this even is. I mean, it looks like a jellyfish or a squid or – well heck, it even kind of looks like an alien. And that’s for good reason, because according to science this isn’t even really one animal – it’s actually a quote ‘collection of organs to move together to act as one’. Wait, what? How is that even possible? Well this colony of individuals are called zooids, and they are all responsible for an independent task that forms the entire animal’s behavior. Still confused? Well, yeah, so am I. 8 The Ocean Sunfish Alright let’s keep things moving right along, up next we have another creature that before today I had never heard of! Which, isn’t too surprising. But check this out! This is the ocean sunfish. One quick fun fact about this huge, ugly – again, no offense – fish, is that if you look closely you’ll notice that it doesn’t have a tail, which is obviously unique for underwater creatures. So for all intents and purposes, this fish is pretty much just a big ol’head. A head that can grow up to about 10 feet long! It feasts all day on small jellyfish, other fish, and even squids - and because this fish is so big and rigid, as you could probably imagine is that the ocean sunfish really doesn’t have that many natural predators – even though sharcs, orca, and even larger sea lions will attack this oddly shaped sea animal. A couple quick fun facts about this ocean sunfish before we move on. For one, it’s the largest quote ‘boney’ fish found anywhere on the planet! Also, the biggest one ever weighed came in at 2.7 tons. 7 Giant Squid We promise to bring you the biggest, nastiest and flat out meanest animals in the oceans, and that’s exactly what we’re gonna do! OK let’s move on to the next clip. Google Earth actually captured a mysterious image of an animal just beneath the water. Experts are claiming that this is a giant squid that measures – get this –from 60 to 80 feet in length. 60 to 80 feet! Now in comparison, the largest squid ever caught and documented was almost 43 feet, so there is a bit of a difference there. But, what do you think? Is this indeed the infamous giant squid? Can you imagine swimming in the ocean, minding your own business, and coming across something alive that’s that large! Sheesh.
