Ethiopian Lion In 2012, a beautiful image of a midnight-black lion went viral, causing some people to question whether black lions really exist. While there have been rumours around the world of black lions, there have been no documented sightings of a completely black lion. These lions would be REALLY good at hunting at night!! 7. Barbary Lion The Barbary lion is also called the Atlas lion, and the Nubian lion. It dwelled in the mountains and deserts of northern Africa, from Egypt to Morocco but is now considered extinct in the wild. Barbary lions grew up to seven feet long and weighed up to 500 pounds, and were the largest lion subspecies. 6. Addis Ababa Lion In 2012, a population of genetically distinct lions was identified at the Addis Ababa Zoo in Ethiopia. The finding came after the zoo requested help from researchers in Leipzig in proving the lions are unique not only in appearance, but also when it comes to their DNA. 5. Asiatic Lion Panthera leo persica, or the Asiatic lion, is one of the few lion species that exist outside of sub-Saharan Africa. This small population dwells in Gujarat, India in the Gir Forest, a former royal hunting ground turned big cat reserve. 4. White Lion The white lion is not actually a species of lion; and, contrary to popular belief, they’re not albinos. Their strikingly beautiful color, which ranges from near-blonde to white, results from a rare recessive genetic mutation known as ‘leucism.’ 3. A tigon is the product of interbreeding between a male tiger and a lioness. At a Russian zoo in 2012, a female liger mated with a male lion and gave birth to a liliger. Are you confused yet? 2. West African Lion The West African lion, Panthera leo leo, has a lighter build, longer legs, and a thinner mane than other lions throughout Africa and is thought to be more genetically similar to the Barbary and Asiatic lions than the sub-Saharan species. 1. Geamana, Romania During the 1970’s, copper was discovered in the Apuseni Mountains surrounding the Romanian village of Geamana. In 1977, Communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu decided to exploit the huge underground deposit. Engineers needed somewhere to dump wastewater from the new copper mine, named Rosia Poieni. As a result, in 1978, the regime forcibly relocated the 400 families living in the town. 8. Blue Lake, Russia Located in Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia, Blue Lake is as beautiful as it is mysterious. Nobody truly knows how deep it is, but it’s believed to be one of Europe’s deepest lakes. Unmanned submersibles have gone as far down as 111.25 meters (365 feet) beneath the water’s surface, with some estimates putting the lake’s possible maximum depth at 258 meters (846.5 feet). 7. Gafsa Beach, Tunisia In August 2014, a lake between 10 and 18 meters (32.8-59 feet) deep appeared out of nowhere from one day to the next! Just overnight in drought-ridden Tunisia. It was discovered by shepherds and named “Lac de Gafsa,” or Gafsa Beach, and quickly became a popular place for people to catch some relief from the heat by taking a swim. 6. Lake Natron, Tanzania The bright-red Lake Natron in Africa’s Great Rift Valley is the world’s most caustic waterbody. What does this mean? It contains high amounts of alkaline and salt, giving the water a pH as high as 10.5 (almost like ammonia), effectively turning animals and anyone else who might fall in- into stone. 5. Lake Kaindy, Kazakhstan Crystal-clear Lake Kaindy is nestled in the Tian Shan Mountains of southern Kazakhstan in Kolsai Lakes National Park, near the border with Kyrgyzstan. It’s four kilometers (2.5 miles) long and ranges in color from bright blue to emerald green depending on the light, due to various minerals in the water, including lime. 4. Boiling Lake, Dominica On the Caribbean island of Dominica, 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles) east of the capital of Roseau, sits a flooded opening in the Earth’s crust, or a fumarole, appropriately named the Boiling Lake. It’s situated at the bottom of a large basin and is filled with blueish-gray water, with a cloud of vapor constantly emanating from the surface. 3. Lake Nyos, Cameroon Located in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, Lake Nyos was considered a non-threatening, placid, blue waterbody until August 26, 1986. That evening, nearby villagers went to inspect a rumbling sound and discovered a tall water fountain spouting from the volcanic lake. It was accompanied by a 100-meter-high (328 feet) white cloud of gas that flowed down the valley and through nearby villages. 2. Mono Lake, California Located 13 miles east of Yosemite National Park in Mono County, California, Mono Lake is a saline soda lake that formed over 760,000 years ago, making it one of the oldest lakes in North America. Due to water coming in, but not going out, the waterbody became highly saline and alkaline, making it inhospitable to most lifeforms, including fish. 1. Lake Karachay, Russia Russia’s Lake Karachay is considered one of the most polluted places on the planet. It has an extremely high radioactive waste content. In 1990, standing on the shore for just an hour would administer a potentially deadly dose of radiation. Lake Karachay is located in the Ural Mountains near Mayak Production Association, one of Russia’s largest nuclear production facilities, which existed in secrecy until 1990. BMW Motorrad Vision Next 100 In 2018, BMW featured its radical concept of a motorcycle representing the company’s vision for the next 100 years at the “Iconic Impulses. The BMW Group Future Experience” exhibition in Los Angeles. The hypothetical motorcycle is called the BMW Motorrad Vision Next 100 and it’s so smart, it eliminates the need for a helmet or any other protective gear, even for amateur riders. 4. Brigade Designed by Charles Bombardier, Brigade is a conceptual driverless motorcycle meant to help keep order on the streets and free-up law enforcement for more important work than monitoring traffic. It’s equipped with cameras, sensors, speakers, and projectors. If that’s not enough, it is powered by electricity and can balance by itself. 3. NeuTron Bike Developed by Parker Brothers Concepts, the NeuTron bike was inspired by the Light Cycle from the 2010 movie Tron Legacy. Parker Brothers Concepts is a Florida-based company that focuses solely on creating wild-looking concept vehicles, so it’s only natural that when they were hired to bring artist Daniel Simon’s Light Cycle blueprints to life for the movie, they nailed the task. 2. BMW Titan In 2016, Istanbul-based Turkish designer Mehmet Doruk Erdem designed the BMW Titan concept. Saint Bernard At a height of up to 2.5 feet and a weight of up to 180 pounds, it’s no wonder the Saint Bernard is considered one of the strongest dog breeds in the world. In fact, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends training Saint Bernards as puppies to prevent them from sneaking food from the dinner table, since they’re tall enough to reach, or they can also accidentally knock people over!! 9. Mastiff At first glance, the mastiff is pretty intimidating! I mean these dogs are giants! Standing around 2.5 feet tall at the shoulders, they often outweigh a grown man. In addition to its colossal size, the mastiff is extremely muscular, and its strength matches its appearance. It also has an incredible bite strength that varies according to the specific breed - for example, the English mastiff has a bite strength of 552 pounds per square inch, while the Dogo Canario’s bite strength ranks around 540 pounds per square inch. 8. Rottweiler Some powerful dogs bump into people and things by accident like a bull in a China shop, seemingly unaware of their size. As an ancient herding breed, however, the Rottweiler does this on purpose when it wants people to fall in line. Although Rottweilers can be trained well, they’re typically not recommended for households with elderly people or young children, due partially to this tendency to knock people over! 7. Carpathian Shepherd The Carpathian shepherd is a very strong dog with a wolfish appearance. Although this breed has a less stocky build than some dogs, it still can weigh up to 100 lbs and it’s an incredibly powerful watchdog that was originally bred for protecting sheep from predators in mountainous terrain. 6. Doberman Pinscher With a maximum weight of 90 pounds and a tall, muscular frame, the Doberman Pinscher is leaner than some of the other powerful dog breeds. However, what it lacks in bulk, the Doberman Pinscher makes up for with its high energy, quick speed, tough nature, and no-nonsense loyalty. It also has a bite strength of 230 pounds per square inch, ranking it among the top 15 dog breeds in that category. 5. Newfoundland The imposing, heavy Newfoundland stands up to 28 inches tall and weighs as much as 150 pounds. It’s one of the world’s largest dog breeds and requires abundant yard space and exercise to stay healthy. Does it remind you of another animal? With its massive head and thick fur, many people say the Newfoundland can get confused with a bear!! 4. Alaskan Malamute The Alaskan malamute reaches a maximum height of 25 inches and typically weighs no more than 85 pounds, and is not among the most powerful dog breeds based on size alone. 3. Dogo Argentino The Dogo Argentino is a pack dog that was originally bred for hunting wild boar and pumas, so this dog is no joke. I mean, pumas! Really?! This supremely athletic, highly-intelligent breed is known for its quick responsiveness, as well as its sheer physical strength. With a muscular frame, intense energy, and a great lung capacity, the Dogo Argentino’s power is explosive to be able to keep up with its prey. 2. Cane Corso The Cane Corso stands at nearly 2.5 feet at the shoulder and often weighs over 100 pounds. This robust Italian breed has the natural appearance of a bodyguard, with a broad head, wide muzzle, and a large, muscular frame. The Cane Corso is an ancient breed that goes back to Roman times. They descend from a type of dog known as mollosers which were bred by the Greek Molossi tribe. 1. Kangal Alright you guys! For those of you who guessed, here is the answer!! A dog’s strength can be measured in various ways, including its body and bite, as noted by journalist Olivia Grisham, who specializes in animal care. It’s therefore difficult to single out a specific breed as the world’s most powerful.
